Chatham Lab-Grown Paraíba-Colored Spinel

Chatham lab-grown Paraíba-colored spinel captures the electrifying color and breathtaking luminescence of the best earth-mined Paraíba tourmaline gemstones, some of the rarest gems on earth. We recreate the perfect environment for the bright blue crystals to grow large and clear. After they have grown, we cut away about 80% of the rough to give you faceted electric-blue crystals with excellent clarity and brilliance.

Better yet, we cut these gems in a wide assortment of shapes that are all but impossible to find in earth-mined Paraíba stones. Since they are grown in our labs, they also have less impact on the environment than earth-mined gems. Visit a Chatham retailer to experience the captivating beauty of this recent and rare gem sensation for yourself.

One of the most significant developments in recent gem history was the discovery in 1989 of a luminous blue-green gem in the mines of Paraíba, Brazil. Paraíba tourmaline’s striking neon color launched a fashion frenzy that has drained the flow of the Paraíba mine. However, its glorious effect can still be witnessed in lab-grown Paraíba-colored spinel.

Since tourmaline’s complex crystal structure makes it ineffective to grow in a laboratory, we recreated the color that makes Paraíba tourmaline so desirable in the gem mineral spinel. Through trial and error, we were able to achieve a color that resembles the finest Paraíba tourmaline. Therefore, we’ve dubbed this gem: Chatham lab-grown Paraíba-colored spinel.

The presence of copper causes the characteristic electric blue Paraíba color. Even in low-light conditions, exceptional Paraíba gems sparkle—a surprising feature in a dark-colored gemstone.

Although a relatively new member of the spinel mineral group, lab-grown Paraíba-colored spinel carries the brilliance, vibrant color saturation and strength that has made spinel fit for the crowns of royalty throughout the ages.

With a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, lab-grown Paraíba-colored spinel is more durable than the gem it most resembles, Paraíba tourmaline, which ranks between 7 and 7.5. This makes Chatham lab-grown Paraíba-colored spinel perfect as an everyday fashion statement gem or even as a personalized center stone for your engagement ring.
